Emissions of volatile organic compounds, including odorous compounds, and inorganic compounds, e.g. H2S and ammonia, from animal production affect local and regional air quality. Emissions arise from intensive livestock production as well as from management of manure as a fertilizer and cause both nuisance (odour) and affects natural resources. In addition, agriculture contributes significantly to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Part of the research within this area is focused at developing biological and chemical air treatment systems to solve these problems. Limiting the source of emissions and abatement of emissions during manure management are other key areas.

An important aspect of the research activity is to develop analytical methods for optimization and documentation of technologies. This is particularly important for quantification of odour emissions. Experimental studies are carried out in laboratory scale, pilot scale and full scale. These are supplemented with mathematical modelling.
