Abstract
Magnets often provide a good solution for practical problems. The main reason is that magnetic fields penetrate many materials and are not easily shielded. I will give a summary of our work on obliquely evaporated and bit patterned media for magnetic data storage, magneto-tactic bacteria for targeted drug delivery and environmental monitoring, magnetic self-assembly for 3D electronics and magnetic particle imaging for cardiovascular imaging and oncology.

This research has been done in a university environment, with education as a primary objective. We experimented with activated learning methods in engineering education in the bachelor, master and PhD curricula, of which I will give a short overview.

Biography
Leon Abelmann is performing research in the area of magnetism in fluids at KIST Europe, Saarbrücken. He holds positions as extra-ordinary professor at The University of Twente, The Netherlands, and Saarland University, Germany. As a PhD student and postdoc, he worked mainly in the area of magnetic data storage, moving from tape recording to magnetic force microscopy, magnetic patterned media and probe storage. When the magnetic recording industry left Europe entirely, he changed his research field towards magnetostatics in combination with fluids. He currently focusses on magnetism in life sciences and magnetically assisted three-dimensional self-assembly.  Leon was very active in education in the Electrical Engineering and Advanced Technology programs, as well as the Honours Program of the University of Twente. He was nominated teacher of the year for Electrical Engineering from 2002 to 2011, only interrupted in 2010, and was recipient of the price in 2005. He received the best teacher award for the Advanced Technology bachelor program in 2010, and the award for excellent education by the TNW department in 2012. http://leon.manucodiata.org
