Guest lecture: Spectrum Sharing for Cost-Effective Capacity Expansion of Wireless Networks

Abstract
With increasing demand for bandwidth-hungry applications such as mobile video, a foreseen shortage of capacity has become a key threat to mobile network operators (MNO).  At the same time, MNO revenues per bit are declining, which motivates the MNOs search for cost-effective ways to expand their capacity. In my talk, I will discuss how spectrum sharing can help MNOs in their capacity search. More specifically, I will introduce two approaches: namely, spectrum sharing in the unlicensed bands and opportunistic spectrum access to the licensed bands. While former raises the challenge of coexistence among the equals, i.e., sharing networks, the latter requires the MNO to leave the spectrum if the licensed owner reappears in the shared spectrum. I will overview how my research addresses these challenges in different ways, e.g., multiple antennas for interference nulling. In the last part of my talk, I will discuss briefly what other possibilities I consider as promising to address the capacity challenge of the MNOs.

Suzan Bayhan received her PhD degree in computer engineering in 2012 from Bogazici University, Istanbul. Between 2012-2016, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki. Currently, she is a senior researcher at TU Berlin and also a Docent in computer science at the University of Helsinki. She received the Google Anita Borg EMEA scholarship in 2009 and co-authored the best paper at ACM ICN 2015. Suzan is on N2Women Board as one of the mentoring co-chairs. Her current research interests include resource allocation in wireless networks, coexistence in the unlicensed spectrum, information-centric networks, and edge/fog/cloud communications.
