Environmental Technology

The environmental technology research area deals with waste streams and pollution of air and water. It includes the study of physical, chemical, and biological processes for treating emissions and waste streams, and, in many cases, recovery of energy or plant nutrients. Understanding sources of pollution, especially processes and rates, is also an important component. Applications include agriculture, industry and household/municipal emissions. Researchers employ concepts and methods from several disciplines (analytical and physical chemistry, microbiology, mathematical modeling, and mass transfer) to develop new knowledge, technology, and management tools that help reduce negative impacts of humans on the environment while optimizing productivity and efficiency.
