Environmental Process Modelling

The Environmental Process Modeling group develops and applies models of physical, chemical, and biological processes that are important for environmental quality. The models, which include detailed process-based approaches and simpler decision-support tools, contribute to better management of animal manure and bio-waste through generation of new knowledge and quantification of management effects. Emission of ammonia and greenhouse gases from manure management and biogas production for energy recovery from organic wastes have been the main applications to date. But new research areas include production of insect biomass and optimization of other industrial processes. The work in this group depends on knowledge of chemistry, microbial transformations in natural and engineered ecosystems, heat and mass transfer, data analysis, and computer programming. Group members collaborate with others in the BCE section on field and laboratory experiments.
