Current developments in power electronics have led to the concomitant growth in the applications of power electronics systems such as renewable energy generation, smart city, energy storage, high-voltage DC (HVDC) transmission, zero-emission marine power system, electric vehicles, and smart grids. Provided that these renewable energy systems continue to expand, Denmark can be expected to be 100 % fossil-free by 2050. What plays the most pivotal role in this paradigm shift are the energy conversion systems, which also depend on power electronics technology. Therefore, the key to the further enhancement of renewable energy systems is in employing highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with sophisticated control solutions. Hence, this presentation reviews some of the most emerging sources of green energy, e.g. wind and photovoltaic energy, which are changing character by means of power electronics and are playing a leading role in electricity generation. This talk further provides a brief description on some of latest trends in the field of advanced power electronics and high-performance future energy systems.



Mohammad Hassan Khooban received the Ph.D. degree in power systems and electronics from the Shiraz University of Technology, Shiraz, Iran, in 2017. From 2016 to 2017, he was a Research Assistant with the University of Aalborg, Aalborg, Denmark, conducting research on advanced control of power electronics, microgrids and marine power systems. From 2017 to 2018, he was a Postdoctoral Associate with Aalborg University, Aalborg. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark. He has authored or coauthored more than 150 publications on journals and international conferences, one book chapter, and holds one patent. His current research interests include control theory and application, power electronics, and its applications in power systems, industrial electronics, and renewable energy systems. Dr. Khooban is currently serving as the Guest Editor/Associate Editor for the Complexity Journal and the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics. He is the Senior Member of IEEE and also serves extensively as a reviewer for various IEEE/IET transactions and journals on power electronics, circuits, and control engineering. He was nominated in 2019 by Thomson Reuters to be the world’s top 1% researchers in Engineering.
